Pre-PA Mentor

Human Biology B.S | University of Texas at Austin

Hi, my name is Carolina! I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2023 with a B.S. in Human Biology and a Certificate of Spanish for Medical Professions. I am honored to be a part of this community and to connect with students as they embark on their own pre-health journeys.

I grew up in rural Texas and started off my undergraduate career at a local community college to save money with the plan to transfer to UT Austin. During high school and my first 2 years of undergrad, I lacked access to valuable resources, such as pre-health mentorship or pre-health counselors, and I relied solely on my own research and planning. I knew that I wanted to serve others through medicine and have my own patients, but I was not sure what roles were out there other than “doctor”. I was initially premed, but I discovered that it was not the best fit for me and felt lost. Having access to a mentorship program during this time would have been incredibly beneficial, as it would have exposed me to a wide variety of medical professions and would have opened my eyes to new possibilities. I would have also gained valuable insights from mentorship that could have aided me on my journey and would have reduced the stress of paving my own way without any sort of guidance.

When I transferred to UT Austin, new doors opened up for me. I discovered the PA field through my first healthcare job as an endoscopy tech, I joined a pre-PA society on campus, and I fell in love with the PA profession. Through my pre-PA society I cultivated a passion for community and mentorship. I hope to foster the same passion in this organization and to share my love for the PA profession with you all!

I ultimately plan to matriculate into a PA program that will support my goal of becoming a culturally-sensitive and compassionate PA. One of my biggest dreams is to be able to continue my medical volunteerism in Latin America, particularly Panamá, when I become a PA-C!

I look forward to meeting you all at our future meetings!
